Ecotherapy/Nature Based Sessions
Nature as a Co-therapist
Nature-based therapy isn't a new concept. Quite the contrary—it's a practice as old as humanity itself. Indigenous peoples have long recognized that earth, water, air, fire, and spirit are not mere elements but powerful means for personal growth, healing, and transformation. Ecotherapy is a therapeutic modality that brings clients in close proximity with nature as a way to promote resilience and healing.
As a Certified Clinical Ecotherapist (Earthbody Institute - Ben Lomond, CA), I incorporate nature practices, fostering healing through connection to the natural world. By allowing the "other than human" world to support us, ecotherapy can have profound benefits. Being still, grounded, connected and reflective in nature allows us to tune in to what is outside of ourselves. When we look at nature, we see ourselves reflected back. Whatever is going on inside us, which we may not be aware of at a conscious level, tends to become clearer as we connect with our environment.
What does an Ecotherapy session look like?
In short, there is no typical ecotherapy session. We might meet at a local greenway/trail/park for our session using nature as our guide. We may hike the entire session, explore, work on activities, or just sit and talk. Our meetings could include movement, however I have found that in the frenetic world in which we live, stillness and immersion in nature can contribute to healing as much as activity -- sometimes, even more so. Each session is organic and tailored to the expressed goals of each client or couple.
